Hiatus No More!

Blogging is much harder to keep up with than I thought it would be, especially given that I am a notoriously lazy bum/procrastinator. But now that I'm back from my sabbatical, I vow to blog as much as possible to catch up on the 3+ weeks of food related events that I neglected to blog about. Highlights from future posts include my first cooking class (!), restuarant location hunting, food reveiws for new resturants, the Samosa Model, and much more so stayed tuned for that.

Last week I finally went on a vacation after graduating and being out in the real world for nearly a year and a half without taking a break. Cancun was a lifesaver and it was my first trip to Mexico! It was absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is in need of some R&R. It was very laid back, not at all crazy with spring breakers--which I was dreading. The food we had along the way varied from "no wonder this is gratis" to "holy crap, there's a party in my mouth" but before I get into all of that, here's a little something to set the mood:
A view of the lagoon from our balcony with stolen coconuts from the golf course which we smuggled in the night before. We thought it was the good idea at the time but had no way of opening them so we used them as paper weights/models instead.

We stayed at the gorgeous Gran Melia with an all inclusive package so we didn't have to worry about where to grub when we got hungry. We accomplished our goal of ordering everything from the room service menu and while the pizzas on the menu were hardly edible, the tortilla soup, apple tart and nachos more than made up for it.

And of course we never went thirsty, there were plenty of drinks to go around.

Por favor, un trago de tequila...
Did I mention this was all part of the inclusive package deal?!

On our way to see the Cenotes of Chichén Itzá, we passed by a field of agave, the heart of all our drinks:

We tried to visit as many of the restuarants as we could in our hotel, but unfortunately we weren't able to make it to all of them. The food was nothing great at the few we did make it to and the service was awful. But here's a picture that will make you forget all of that and get your mouth watering:

Although there were no major food mishaps on our journey (food poisoning, diarrhea) we did have a few party fouls including spilled drinks, dropped burgers and food being cleared out of our rooms before we could even get to it.

All in all, our stay at the Gran Melia was lovely, I mean how can you not enjoy a place with a lobby like this:

The best find on our trip definately has to be this gem of a place located outside of the Guadalajra Airport. We ventured out during our layover in the city to the nearby "Fruty Lonch" and had some grub while we waited for our connection flight.

I know what you're thinking, but havn't you ever heard that you shouldn't judge a restuarant by the trash bins parked outside of it?? Inside you'll find delicious food, great service and cheap prices to boot!

Next time you happen to find yourself in Guadalajara, make sure you check it out.
